We didn't set out to create the world's first non-crypto non-currency.

Fifteen years of field work and collaboration in dozens of communities led to the design of Beetcoin. Who could have foreseen that, while we were at it, crypto would explode, civil society would implode, and Fake would be on the verge of conquering Real?

Taking an alternative, radically constructive financial stand has never been more important.

Cryptocurrency offers blockchain technology, creating “trustless, digital currency.” Beetcoin goes in the opposite direction—doubling down on trust.

We trust in local knowledge and local decision making. We trust that collective intelligence and grassroots cooperation can keep the forces of fakery at bay. We trust that there’s nothing more real than healthy local food and fertile soil.

This is the kind of trust for which no technology can substitute.

We can’t all be in the room having a direct, local hand in making a 0% loan, but we can get together periodically online to share and explore.  We can strengthen our collective voice.  Every now and then, beetcoin donors have the opportunity to do so, hearing from leading farmers, financiers and activists and one another.

People getting together in person, meeting farmers and local food entrepreneurs and voting on 0% loans. Plus an online community of grassroots donors who share the vision and want to see the network of local slow money groups grow. Can this really be a thing?

Yes, it can.  In this age of anonymity and wealth inequality, reaffirming the value of local relationships and trust is one of the most important things we can do.  And, as so many of us are learning, it’s wildly rewarding.
