Re:
What the Heck Is Non-Crypto Non-Currency (and Why It is the Right Way To Do Small Organic Farms and Local Food Systems in a Big Way)
We need, in Tom Friedman’s recent words, “a whole lot of everything” to “unleash capitalism” so that we can deal “a knock-out blow” at “scale” to the multiple social and ecological crises of the day.
We also need to think outside the box. Didn’t realize this was a box? It is. It’s the box of going faster and faster, more and more global, more and more cyber trying to fix the problems caused by going faster and faster, more and more global, more and more cyber. It’s the box of Silicon Valley moonshots.
The Too Many Eggs in the Basket of Technological Cleverness Department has a long history (ok, it’s not always a box; sometimes it’s a basket). Take cars, for instance. At the turn of the 20th century, the lure of cars wasn’t their speed. That would come later. The problem to which cars were the technological solution was manure. We got rid of manure on city streets and a century later we face the new, much more stubborn systemic problem of carbon in the atmosphere. To say so doesn’t make us anti-car. Just historically aware.
When it comes to the internet, generally, and cryptocurrency, in particular, a similar discussion about unintended consequences is to be had.
